Furniture Stores Don’t Often Remove Old Furniture
As you can see from the above list, most furniture companies don’t offer furniture removal service when delivering your new sleeper sofa, bedroom suite, or mattress set. This is usually due to liability and safety issues for their employees.
What is One-to-One Furniture Removal?
There are a few furniture stores out there that will haul away your old furniture on a one-for-one basis when delivering new items you purchased from them.
Finally getting a one-piece entertainment center to replace the hodgepodge you’ve been using for years? That’s awesome!
But there’s some bad news, too. One-to-one removal means one piece for one piece. If you’re replacing an assortment of pieces with a larger, one-piece furniture item, they’ll only take one.
This means that if you bought a new desk for your home office from them, they will remove the old desk you’re replacing when delivering the new set, but nothing else.
This additional service also usually only applies to mattress sets and major appliances. You will also have to pay an additional fee for this service, which ranges anywhere from $25 to $140.
Haul to the Curb and Your Local Trash Pickup
Other furniture companies will haul your old sofa, dresser, or mattress set to the curb to be picked up by your regular garbage collector and taken to the local landfill.
However, in order for this to be useful, you’ll need to make sure your trash service will pick up that old recliner along with whatever’s in your trash cart on their regular route and that they won’t charge you extra for it.
Before you schedule the delivery of your new furniture, you need to make sure that you can arrange for your old furniture to be removed before or at the same time as the delivery of your new furniture.
Otherwise, if your old furniture items are left out on the curb, you will likely be cited and fined for illegal dumping by your local government, rental manager, and/or your homeowner’s association.

Who Removes Old Furniture?
As mentioned before, it may be possible to have your old dresser picked up with your regular garbage, though most private and government-sponsored waste collection services do charge an additional fee for bulky waste removal.
The majority of trash collectors that offer removal of bulky waste such as old furniture require that you request a special collection at least a week in advance.
Many cities and municipalities will not pick up old furniture or other junk at all. If this is the case where you live, you’ll have to haul your old couch or recliner to the landfill yourself or hire a junk removal company to pick up and dispose of your furniture for you.
How to Donate Old Furniture
A better way to get rid of unwanted furniture is by donating it to a local charity. National charities such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and Habitat for Humanity are a few good places to start.
Some charities will even come and pick up your donated furniture, usually for a fee.
Otherwise, you’ll need to take your furniture donation to their drop-off location. Calling and asking if they offer furniture pickup is always worth a shot, though.
When you contact the charity, find out if they can accept the furniture items you’re wanting to donate. Charities can only take furniture items they need and have room for.
If the charity can’t pick up your old sectional sofa or dresser now, and if you don’t need to get rid of your unwanted furniture immediately, you can call them again in a couple of months when they may have more need for it.
Best Way to Remove Old Furniture Items
Because getting rid of the old furniture when replacing it can be such a hassle, many people decide to use junk removal to solve their problem.
In most cases, you would use a junk removal company if you have bulky items to get rid of that won’t fit in your garbage bin or several items of small, miscellaneous junk.
Hiring a junk removal company is like hiring movers, except your old patio furniture gets taken away forever instead of being taken to your new home.
Junk removal is by far the easiest option for getting rid of bulky junk items such as old furniture. Junk removal companies have one thing in common: they pick up and dispose of things that people no longer need, want, or have room for.
This makes junk removal the perfect solution for getting rid of old furniture when the furniture company you are buying from doesn’t offer that service.
